The team at Gosport Marina have been busy carrying out essential operations and maintenance at Endeavour Quay boatyard. Throughout lockdown, the yard has worked on, providing essential services for local police, harbour patrol boats and for onsite tenants carrying out important maintenance for the Ministry of Defence, Border Force and Southampton Pilot boats.
Alongside performing emergency lifts, Endeavour Quay relaunched boats for private customers – undertaking the relaunch and return of the boat to its berth on behalf of Premier berth holders who were unable to visit the marina.
The team also carried out work to the 180 ton travel hoist to replace a wheel bearing. Whilst this is a relatively easy task on a car, on a 180 ton hoist it takes a lot longer and bit more thought. To access the hoist’s wheel bearing, the team had to remove the enormous wheel and tyre – which alone weighs 3 tonnes, measures 2.8m high and requires a pressure of 130psi or 9bar!
As one of the largest hoists on the South Coast, the machine is 9m wide, 14m long and 11m high. The wheel bearing that was replaced was the original and was over 20 years old – which confirms that they are built to last! The works took our maintenance team just over two days to complete and the hoist is now fully operational and at work in the boatyard.
