Endeavour is the Quay for the Survey fleet.

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Endeavour Quay lifted out the third Survey vessel for refit in as many months. This time it was the Southampton based company EMU Limited’s offshore Research Vessel DISCOVERY

RV Discovery

This 90foot 100ton high tech steel vessel is normally found offshore around the coast of the UK surveying the seabed for university research programmes or wind farm construction companies. She was lifted out of the water at Endeavour Quay using the 180 ton capacity travel hoist and blocked off undercover in one of the large boatsheds. The enormous doors of ‘A’ shed were opened fully to allow the travel hoist to drive inside with the RV DISCOVERY in the slings.

The vessel had a four week window in which to complete works and get back out on the water for her next surveying job and Tyne Slipways managed to complete the tasks on time. After a couple of days spent on the service pontoon at Endeavour Quay she was back to work offshore.

The skipper of the RV DISCOVERY, Jim Baylor, was very happy with the service and efficiency with which the work was undertaken;    “I would recommend this yard to anyone looking for friendly and attentive service as well as good work completed on time – They do things when they say they’re going to do things, which makes a change from other yards we have used in the past”

Hugo Boss 3 hits the water

Monday, June 14th, 2010

The Alex Thomson Racing team pulled in to ex-Pindar before going to Green Marine for Hugo Boss modsEndeavour Quay last month fresh from Green Marine where their Ex Pindar Open 60 had undergone a radical redesign. The new design features came from Juan Kouyoumdjian, the original designer of ex Pindar, working closely with Alex Thomson.

HB3 cockpit detailThe redesign involved chopping out the cockpit and coachroof and laying a new deck. The most visually significant change is the new cockpit arrangement and its ‘pods’, which are set right back aft leaving a huge expanse of open deck of about 50ft. This open deck allows two extra sails hatches and lets water run off the deck easily. The cockpit has the added feature of a sliding roof/windscreen that goes between the pods to provide a virtually enclosed cockpit and steering position.

The boat was lifted out of the water at Endeavour Quay and put into one of the big sheds for final touch ups to the boat and assembly of the brand new mast and keel. After a few weeks she was ready to be pulled out of the shed and have the keel attached, a task that was completed in a matter of hours using the equipment and expertise provided by Endeavour Quay. Hugo Boss 3 launched from Endeavour QuayThe next day the new rig was stepped and tuned ashore before finally the new Hugo Boss 3 was launched.

She is now in the water in Gosport preparing for an Atlantic crossing to New York and a short spell Stateside. She is due to return to Endeavour Quay later in the summer for a mini refit before final on-water training for the Barcelona World Race.

Bare Necessities in the 180ton capacity hoist at Endeavour QuayThe magnificent Oyster 82 “Bare Necessities” made a return visit to Endeavour Quay in the spring of 2010 for a full top side strip back and re-spray.

Endeavour Quay has unrivalled access for big yachts; with no restrictions on mast height, deep water access and a 180 ton capacity travel hoist. The yard was able to safely lift and store this beautiful multi million pound yacht on its secure 4000sq metre hard standing in Gosport, UK.

The painting contractors, Blue Fin Yachts Ltd from Cornwall and the Skipper and crew were all comfortably housed for the duration ashore at a local crew house close to the boatyard provided by crew-houses.co.uk.  After 40 layers of paint and some routine annual maintenance she was ready to go afloat again on the 1st May.

“Bare Necessities” is now back in the water and spending the summer season in the Solent where she is available for private and corporate charter.

Artemis 1, The Profit Hunter

Endeavour Quay was happy to provide facilities for the new owner of the IMOCA Open 60 “Artemis 1” to complete a full refit over the winter of 2009-10. The brief for the design team of was to turn the solo offshore racing yacht in to an offshore Med racer that could easily be handled by the owner and a crew of four. The new owner, a French businessman, already owns an 80foot racer cruiser that he keeps in the Med and he wanted something a little more “racey”, he has certainly got that!

The refit included a full respray undertaken by the onsite contractor Ady Murrey Yacht Painting Ltd, taking the yacht from the traditional Artemis colours to a ‘duck shell’ blue favoured by the new owner. Owen Clarke Design, the original designers of the yacht, was asked to develop a programme of preventative maintenance on the main Rusalka in refit undercover at Endeavour Quaysystems onboard and also a re-design of the interior. Modifications included a new engine, a modified forward bulkhead and new chainplates, and the unusual inclusion for an Open 60 of basic a galley, a shower and mountings for a chemical toilet.

Endeavour Quay provided the lifting and storage facilities to enable the owner’s team of boat builders and crew to get on with the job. The boatyard has the access and facilities for specialist race yachts that is unrivalled locally. With no air draft restrictions, deep water access, three massive boatsheds and an Open Yard Policy, it is renowned as the place to go for big boat refits in the UK.

The race yacht was relaunched at the end of March 2010 under the new name of ‘Rusalka’ and is based in the Solent for the summer season
